INTERCEPTOR+Plus™ Optical Network Security System For Active and Dark Fiber Monitoring

INTERCEPTOR+Plus™ Optical Network Security System incorporates patented technology to monitor dark or active fibers (fibers transmitting data) in optical networks for physical intrusion into the cable or cable pathway and to ensure the availability of the network.  A single INTERCEPTOR+Plus port can provide protection for the entire continuous cable run. The INTERCEPTOR+Plus has an integrated optical shutter capable of interrupting the data path on monitored fibers when an intrusion attempt is detected.  Active monitored fibers are connected at the far end of the cable run to a Remote Termination Unit (RTU), which is used to return the monitoring signal to the INTERCEPTOR+Plus. The INTERCEPTOR+Plus model is also capable of operating on dark fibers making it a universal system.

What is Active Fiber Monitoring?
Active Fiber refers to a fiber that is actually in use ("lit") and transmitting data. The fiber is connected between two switches and routers, and the equipment is activated. INTERCEPTOR+Plus is capable of transmitting it's monitoring signal over the active fibers without touching the data or affecting bandwidth. This provides the utmost level of protection since the active fibers are individually monitored. As in the case of Dark Fiber Monitoring, a few active fibers could also be monitored to provide protection for the entire cable. This is referred to as Adaptive Fiber Monitoring™. If ingress into the cable or cable pathway is attempted, the protected active fibers will sense the disturbance and issue an alarm. The effectiveness of this is dependent upon the design of the optical cable itself. Some cable designs require monitoring on more fibers than others. INTERCEPTOR+Plus can also be used to monitor dark fibers which is recommended when there are plans to activate those fibers in the future.

When To Monitor Active Fibers?
   • When no spare fibers are available in the cable
   • When it is required that the data path be interrupted when an intrusion event is detected
   • When the threat level demands that fiber level protection is necessary and affordable
