BEYOND THE EPISODE | AMANDA FROM NIS
When it comes to protecting critical infrastructure, what you can't see can be just as important as what you can.
Security cameras are a cornerstone of perimeter protection, but they have limitations. Blind spots, poor lighting, obstructions, and large properties can make it difficult to detect every potential intrusion.
That's where fiber optic sensing (FOS) adds another layer of protection.
At Network Integrity Systems (NIS), we're using fiber optic sensing to help protect government facilities, energy infrastructure, data centers, and other critical assets by detecting physical activity that traditional security systems may miss.

Seeing What Cameras Can't: A Real-World Proof of Concept
During a recent proof of concept at an energy substation, NIS demonstrated how fiber optic sensing could enhance an existing perimeter security system.
The facility already had security cameras in place. But during testing, our fiber optic sensing technology detected three intrusion events that the cameras failed to identify.
The demonstration highlighted an important distinction: cameras rely on visual information, while fiber optic sensing detects physical disturbances associated with movement and intrusion attempts.
Events detected by the sensing system were processed through NIS INSIGHT™ Alarm Management Software, demonstrating how detection information can support coordinated security responses, including drone-based investigation.
The takeaway wasn't that cameras are ineffective. It was that a more complete security picture emerges when multiple technologies work together.
Adding Another Layer of Protection
Fiber optic sensing complements cameras, access control systems, drones, and other security technologies by providing continuous monitoring across protected areas.
Depending on the installation, fiber optic cables can detect activity such as:
- Fence climbing, cutting, and tampering along protected boundaries.
- Footsteps and approaching personnel in monitored areas, including locations beyond camera coverage.
- Digging and underground intrusion near sensitive infrastructure.
- Vehicle movement near restricted areas.
- Rooftop intrusion where traditional fencing isn't practical.
Rather than relying solely on visual surveillance, security teams receive alerts that help them identify where potential threats are occurring.
Fiber optic sensing tells security teams where to look. Cameras help them see what's happening. Together, they provide stronger situational awareness.
Protecting Critical Infrastructure
NIS fiber optic sensing solutions support perimeter protection across a variety of environments:
- Government and military facilities: Monitoring fence lines, restricted areas, rooftops, and other vulnerable locations.
- Energy and utility infrastructure: Detecting unauthorized activity around substations and remote facilities, including locations with limited staffing.
- Data centers: Protecting exterior perimeters, rooftops, and sensitive areas surrounding critical technology infrastructure.
Through NIS INSIGHT Alarm Management Software, detection events can be correlated and integrated with cameras, access control, and other security platforms, helping operators assess potential threats and coordinate responses.
The Future of Perimeter Security Is Layered
Cameras will always play an important role in protecting critical infrastructure. But our energy substation proof of concept demonstrated why visual surveillance alone may leave important gaps.
Adding fiber optic sensing to a layered security strategy extends detection capabilities, improves situational awareness, and helps security teams respond to potential threats.
Because when it comes to protecting critical infrastructure, the threats you don't see are often the ones you most need to detect.
